India after the elections

India’s latest general election, which concluded at the start of June, proved to be closer than most observers anticipated before voting began in April. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell far short of its target of 370 seats in parliament’s 543-member lower house for itself and 400 for its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) overall, with the BJP losing its single-party majority and the NDA majority sizeably reduced. The INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) front, formed last year to strengthen the challenge to Modi, performed much better than projected by surveys.

The poll campaign was stormy. The Election Commission of India notably warned both the BJP and the Congress party, at the vanguard of the INDIA bloc, to refrain from divisive speech.

During this webinar, we will analyse how the election played out, and the possible reasons for this, along with the outlook for the government as it tries to steer India through the next five years.
